Clothing, furniture, household goods, books, nonperishable food, and hygiene products may be accepted, depending on the organization.

Question 3

Is There a Cost for This Service?

Question 4

Accepted Answer

Through our partners, we deliver to vetted local charities across the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, including CCA, Genesis Women’s Shelter, GRACE, and more.

Question 5

Do I Need a Special License to Drive a Moving Truck?

Accepted Answer

No. For standard rental moving trucks like those from U-Haul or Penske, a regular, valid driver's license is all that is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not necessary for these vehicles.

Question 6

Does My Personal Auto Insurance Cover a Rental Truck?

Accepted Answer

Typically, no. Most personal auto insurance policies do not extend coverage to large rental trucks. It is highly recommended that you purchase one of the damage waivers or insurance plans offered directly by the rental company.

Question 7

How Do Tolls Work When Driving a Rental Moving Truck?

Accepted Answer

Most rental trucks are equipped with a toll pass from the rental agency. The company will bill you for any tolls you incur during your trip, often with a small administrative fee. Do not use your personal toll tag, as it may not be properly registered for the truck's vehicle class.

Question 8

What Is the Minimum Age to Rent a Moving Truck?

Accepted Answer

Most companies require drivers to be at least 18 years old. However, for one-way or long-distance rentals, the minimum age is often raised to 21 or 25. Always confirm the specific age policy with the rental company before booking.

Question 9

Should I Change the Locks on My New Home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely. You have no way of knowing who the previous owners or tenants may have given a spare key to. For your peace of mind and security, changing or re-keying all exterior door locks should be one of your very first priorities, ideally on moving day itself.

Question 10

Besides Utilities, Who Do I Need to Update With My New Address?

Accepted Answer

You should immediately file an official change of address with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). After that, be sure to update your address with the DMV for your driver's license, your bank and credit card companies, your employer's HR department, your insurance providers, and any subscription services you use.

Question 11

What Are the First Safety Items I Should Check or Locate?

Accepted Answer

On your first day, you should test all the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace their batteries. It is also critical to locate your main water shut-off valve and the circuit breaker box so you know exactly where they are in case of an emergency.

Question 12

How Do I Find Out About Local Services Like Trash Pickup Days?

Accepted Answer

The easiest way is to visit your new city or municipality's official website. They will have a section for public works or residential services that lists the specific schedules for trash, recycling, and yard waste collection, as well as any local rules you need to follow.

Question 13

What Are the First Official Steps to Becoming a Resident in a New State?

Accepted Answer

After moving, your first priorities should be updating your legal documents. Most states require you to get a new driver's license and register your vehicle within a specific timeframe (usually 30-90 days). You should also take this opportunity to register to vote at your new address and update your car insurance policy, as rates can change based on your new location.

Question 14

My Boxes Are Unpacked, but My New Place Doesn't Feel Like "Home." What Can I Do?

Accepted Answer

To make a new space feel like your own, focus on engaging your senses. Cook a familiar, comforting meal that reminds you of your old home. Unpack personal items like photos, books, and favorite blankets early in the process. Playing your favorite music and introducing familiar scents with candles or diffusers can also quickly make an unfamiliar environment feel more personal and comfortable.

Question 15

I Feel Really Lonely and Homesick. What Are Some Immediate Things I Can Do to Cope?

Accepted Answer

First, acknowledge that these feelings are a completely normal part of the moving process. To combat them, establish a simple daily routine as quickly as possible. Schedule regular video calls with your old friends and family, but also challenge yourself to one small, new experience each day, like walking a different route, visiting a local park, or trying a new coffee shop.

Question 16

I Budgeted for the Move, but What Unexpected Expenses Should I Prepare For After Arriving?

Accepted Answer

Common post-move costs often include one-time setup fees or deposits for utilities like electricity and internet. You will also have expenses for getting a new driver's license and vehicle registration. Be prepared for the "stock-up" costs of buying household items you didn't realize you needed, like new cleaning supplies, shower curtains, or pantry staples.
